When can I have an early scan?

We offer early pregnancy scans from 6+ weeks, but we recommend waiting around 14 days after your first strong positive pregnancy test before booking your scan where possible. WHY? The reason is simple - a few days can make a big difference in early pregnancy. In the very early stages, your baby is developing incredibly quickly. Coming for your scan just a day or two earlier can sometimes mean that it is too early to clearly see a heartbeat, even when everything is progressing normally. This can understandably cause unnecessary worry and uncertainty, when simply waiting a few more days may give us a much clearer picture. We want your first experience with us to be as reassuring and informative as possible, which is why we recommend waiting until there has been enough time for your pregnancy to develop and for us to have the best chance of seeing what we would expect at your stage. If you’re unsure about when to book, just get in touch - we’re always happy to advise you.

What happens during your appointment?

Before your scan, we’ll ensure your consent form has been fully completed and take the time to check any relevant medical or pregnancy history.Your scan will usually begin transabdominally, so you’ll need a full bladder for your appointment. If a transvaginal scan is indicated to obtain clearer or more accurate information, your sonographer will explain why this may be recommended and talk you through what it involves. You are always in control of your care. A transvaginal scan will only be carried out with your informed consent, and you can ask questions or change your mind at any time.

What if we find something wrong?

If we identify something that requires further assessment, we’ll explain our findings clearly and advise you on the appropriate next steps.Where appropriate, we can make direct referrals to our local NHS Trust, where members of our sonography team have worked for many years and continue to work within the NHS. This means we have established professional links with local NHS services and can help ensure you know where to seek the appropriate further care.

Your Images To Take Home

We’ll make sure you have plenty to remember your visit by. You’ll receive digital copies of your scan images, plus printed images beautifully presented in one of our Tiny Toes presentation folders — ready to take home and treasure.
